Thanks Paul, and thanks Professor Kevin Morgan (also at risk of redundancy) for his comment which for some reason didn't get posted up:
“Every academic I know at Cardiff University will identify with the sentiments expressed in Leighton’s post, a post that is both brave and compelling. Brave because I have never known the atmosphere among colleagues to be so stymied by fear. And compelling because it’s a well informed analysis that is frank but fair. As Leighton says, the UEB proposal has already wrought reputational damage to our university and it will leave a legacy of low trust that will outlive the tenures of every architect of the proposal. For the sake of everyone at Cardiff University - UEB members included - let’s craft a fairer and smarter solution to our common problems”.
Thank you Leighton for shedding light on the internal impacts of what to an outsider appears a general madness. It is hard to believe that an institution can treat its people so callously. People who like you and Kevin Morgan have made not only huge academic contributions but have underpinned social, cultural and political life in Wales and beyond. It is good to know that there is resistance to this ransacking of a vital Welsh and UK institution.
Another excellent piece, Layton. I spent 28 years at CARBS and the key is that it does a number of things most other business schools don’t. Things like that form its competitive advantage and it is exactly those things not understood or overlooked by senior management. Although now retired, I am right behind you. Paul Nieuwenhuis
